A New Dementia Café in Sorrento!
We’re plugging into the Sorrento community and adding them to our growing network of social groups supporting families, couples and people living with dementia.
Building a brand-new Umbrella Dementia Café takes a village! So, we’ve joined forces with the team at Sorrento Community Centre, the inclusive community experts, to create regular and informal social meetings, fondly called ‘cafés’, for local couples experiencing dementia both online and in person. Our cafés will be for people who just want to feel connected and have the chance to share experiences with other people living the same shaky dementia journey.
Our 5th café ‘under our Umbrella’ started on Thursday the 2nd of September 2021 (online if you can believe it) with 3 couples and two volunteers meeting via Zoom every fortnight until the lockdown lifted in November 2021. In these online cafés, we achieved the all important task of officially naming the café and we even created a logo to boot!
Of course, nothing compares to the face to face café experience.
So, on the 25th November 2021, now four couples and two volunteers finally meet at the Sorrento Community Centre and celebrated the first physical café with an ice-cream tasting competition, donated our friends at Mubble ice-creamery in Sorrento!

Who are Umbrella Dementia Cafés?
Umbrella Dementia Cafés has coordinated over 310 dementia cafés both online and in person since 2016 using the ageless ‘village model’. Now we believe it’s time to share our knowledge and empower local communities to do it too.
Umbrella Dementia Cafés is a registered charity with the determined goal to improve the social health and well-being of people living with dementia. We support a network of five social groups, made up of couples and their partners with early to mid-stage dementia and who continue to reside in the community.
These lovely photos of each of our café groups were taken before COVID-19 restrictions. All our cafés are Covid Safe, where social distancing and mask wearing is embraced and not a problem.
“We spend our lives connecting with people socially, finding different groups to bring us a sense of belonging. This absolutely should be the same for anyone experiencing dementia.”Kirsty Porter, our Founder and CEO, is an enthusiastic and passionate advocate for increasing social choices for people living with dementia.
We can only exist because of the kind donations and fundraising efforts of our local community and the generous donation from our philanthropic partners.
