New Dementia Café on the Peninsula!
Our cafés are online and in person.
We’re plugging into the Sorrento community and adding them to our growing network of social groups supporting families, couples and people living with dementia.
Building a brand-new Umbrella Dementia Café takes a village! So, we’ve joined forces with the team at Sorrento Community Centre, the inclusive community experts, to create regular and informal social meetings, fondly called ‘cafés’, for local couples experiencing dementia both online and in person. Our cafés will be for people who just want to feel connected and have the chance to share experiences with other people living the same shaky dementia journey.
Starting on Thursday the 2nd of September, and continuing every fortnight, we are opening the ‘Sorrento Café’ online via Zoom. Of course, nothing compares to the face to face social experience but with so many couples keen to meet others who are living with dementia, we’re getting on with it and introducing everyone in a very ‘COVID normal’ kind of way!
Every second Thursday starting 2nd September
Sorrento Community Centre,
10am – 12noon, $14 per couple
Online during lockdown periods,
10am – 11am, free
Connect over a hot cuppa online via Zoom or in person at the Sorrento Community Centre where you’ll meet new friends, and share ideas about how to stay at home longer while living with dementia.

Umbrella Dementia Cafés has coordinated over 260 dementia cafés both online and in person since 2016 using the ageless ‘village model’, now we believe it’s time to share our knowledge and empower local communities to do it too. In 2020, we hosted and facilitated over 125 Zoom cafes!
These lovely photos of each of our café groups were taken before COVID-19 restrictions. All our cafés are Covid Safe, where social distancing and mask wearing is embraced and not a problem.
“We spend our lives connecting with people socially, finding different groups to bring us a sense of belonging. This absolutely should be the same for anyone experiencing dementia.”Kirsty Porter, our Founder and CEO, is an enthusiastic and passionate advocate for increasing social choices for people living with dementia.
When COVID-19 restriction allow us, our physical cafe are a two-hour morning tea which includes a fun meet and greet, group activities and an optional carers peer support meeting, called Care & Share. The trained volunteers, build friendships, create beautiful spaces, and enjoy meaningful activities with those living with dementia to allow their partners to connect and chat with others in the caring role.
Umbrella Dementia Cafés is a registered charity with the determined goal to improve the social health and well-being of people living with dementia. We support a network of five social groups, made up of couples and their partners with early to mid-stage dementia and who continue to reside in the community. We exist because of the kind donations and fundraising efforts of our local community
See you on the Peninsula!
