Fundraising

This year we started to stretch our legs and try some fundraising ideas. We are overwhelmed with the generosity we have had so far and the wider community support for the Umbrella Dementia Cafes.

Each of our fundraising events has allowed us to take the next step to creating more choices for our elder who attend the cafe, more connection inside the cafe, more awareness in the community and finally, every even is bringing us closer to our community goal of being more dementia inclusive and friendly.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this remarkable journey to change the way we live with dementia in our own community.

SUCESSFUL! OUR PROJECT WAS PICKED!

Posted 3/10/2018
The moment I found out! The moment I found out!

SUCCESSFUL! We received the highest votes in our area for the Pick My Project campaign, an initiative funded by the Victorian Government to support projects that are run by local community.

Congratulations to the other 236 successful project ideas from across the state who will share in $30m in funding to help their projects idea become a reality.

THANK YOU to everyone who voted for the Umbrella Dementia Cafes in our local community! We are one of 25 successful projects in the Eastern Metro Region and one of 237 successful projects Victorian wide!

Our allocated $75,500 will be dedicated to sustaining and building up our current cafes at One. Community Church and Koonung Cottage Community House, but more significantly will assist in delivering a training program to help other community houses build their own dementia cafés, bringing together a more connected, stronger, united Umbrella Dementia Cafés family.

It’s also a massive win for the little humble community cottage in Blackburn North and to the two beautiful ladies Donalda and Carolyn who run it.   Having trialed the Cafés for only 6 months, both Donalda and Carolyn saw how this idea could positively impact other community houses, not least to draw in a most isolated group of people back to community.   It has been a terrific joy for us witnessing new couples living with dementia embrace Koonung Cottage as their 'safe place’.  We've also enjoyed the marvellous feeling of connecting a group of local volunteers who share the same passion; supporting their most vulnerable local elders living with an isolating disease.   Koonung Cottage Community House - you are a little gem!

Our first Cafe!Our first Cafe!

It has been a great honour a privilege to be a part of the Umbrella Dementia Cafes and now, we have a precious resource to allow us to connect more people & more communities to our Umbrella Dementia Cafes family!

On behalf of every couple, family and volunteer who attends each and every cafe - THANK YOU!

Your efforts and precious votes have made us stronger, and will make us even strong yet! A truly marvellous day and a great win for people living with dementia!

Pick My Project - We have been Shortlisted!

Posted 13/8/2018

We have been successful in the first round of Pick My Project, a new $30 million Victorian Government initiative! The next step is to click our picture on the right, register, vote and let your friends know about it!

All you need is an email account and a smart phone at the ready, it only takes 5 minutes.  To vote for the Umbrella Dementia Cafes,  you must live or work within a 5km radius of our cafés. (There are a few exceptions to this rule, so type in your postcode and you’ll be surprised what pops up!)

See what community projects are happening in your local community and VOTE to help bring them to life!

We have been working hard on our marketing campaign doing email drops to all who know and love us, and beating our local streets posting flyers the old fashioned way, in the letter boxes! Drumming up enough support to get us over the line.

Koonung Cottage Community House will be available Monday - Thursday between 11am - 12 noon every day until 17th September to help you with the voting process, especially if you don’t have an email address.  Please call the Community House on 9878 6632 to book a 5 minute appointment.

We believe we can do great things and inspire other communities to do the same.

We believe we can de-isolate people living with dementia by involving the whole community.

We believe we can create more awareness and innovation by including local families and school children into our volunteer program.

We believe the people living with dementia can thrive (not just survive) if we keep the care-couple connected through love, pride, hope and appreciation.

We believe it takes a village to age with dignity.

All our fingers and toes are crossed to be successful in the voting stages!

Thomas The Tank Engine Success!

Posted 16/7/2018

Thank you to the beautiful people at Brand Smart, particularly lovely Sally, Marketing Manager, who thought of UDC when deciding who could benefit when Thomas the Tank Engine took the kids for rides during these last school holidays.

A massive result, not least for our awareness campaign and to de-isolate our elders living with dementia!

Sally’s little plant in a tea cup was made by one of our very grateful volunteers. We will spend the money on a educational resource cupboard.

Thank you Brand Smart ????

Our First Movie Night Fundraiser!

Posted 10/5/2018

Wow!  What a night!  Our first fundraiser was a huge success!

From everyone at Umbrella Dementia Cafés, we want to say a giant thank you for you support last Thursday in attending our first movie fundraising night.  Tully was certainly an emotional, thought provoking movie and I certainly shed a few tears upon reflection of the journey that the movie took me on.

Your generosity in attending the evening and through supporting the raffle has meant that we were able to raise a fantastic $2,396 for Umbrella Dementia Cafés, which will be used to support the creation of our not-for profit charity social enterprise.

We would like to once again say a big thank you to our sponsors for the evening who donated some fantastic raffle prizes, and to the Blackburn South Community Branch of Bendigo Bank for their fantastic donation of $1,500 towards our organisation.

We look forward to hopefully seeing you at our next fundraising event so please watch out on social media and school newsletters.  All the photo's from the evening was posted on the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/UmbrellaDementiaCafes/ later this week.  So check it out if you were there!

If anyone would like to know more about what we are doing, or would like to donate their time or some food for a café either at (Koonung Cottage or Blackburn One. Church) , then please do let me know.  We could not run our cafés without the support of our volunteers and the generosity of the local community.

Thank you,

Kirsty Porter and Nicole Bruhn
UDC Fundraising Team
